I'm in the final stretches of writing my Ph.D. dissertation on drum 'n'
bass, which is the culmination of fieldwork in Middletown, CT, Boston and
New York since 2002. I examine the major musical elements of drum 'n'
bass: sampling, drum loops, and sound effects/affects. I include musical
analyses, historical background and ethnographic interview material.

"An Overview of the History of Technological Discourse in Popular Music Studies"
I wrote this essay for the Historical Methodologies course at Wesleyan (a required graduate seminar for ethnomusicology students), taught by Su Zheng. I examine the emergence and characterization of discourses
surrounding technology, as well as the establishment of Popular Music Studies. I also include a comparison of approaches to the discussion of technology and electronic dance music in three texts. (bibliography)
